Personality:

Positive: Kind-hearted Ella’s mother tells her “have courage and be kind”. It’s a guiding principle of her life - she always seeks to show kindness to others, believing that kindness brings more goodness into the world. We see this even in moments where Ella herself might be suffering - for example, when a man brings her news of her father’s passing. Ella is heartbroken, but thanks the man and acknowledges that having to tell her must have been very difficult for him. She is also kind to the beggar who comes to ask her for a drink, offering her milk even though she’s heartbroken to have had her mother’s dress destroyed. Even in her darkest moments, Ella sees beyond her pain and is kind to others.

Negative: Naive Because Ella approaches the world with kindness, she has a difficult time recognizing when someone might be plotting against her. This is especially true of her stepmother and stepsisters. When her stepmother says that her stepsisters don’t have enough space in their bedroom, Ella offers up her own. Her stepmother quickly jumps on the offer, and instead of putting Ella in another bedroom, tells her to sleep in the attic - just until they can renovate the house. Renovations never happen (she seems to have never planned to move Ella out of the attic) and Ella remains in the attic, where it’s often too cold for her to sleep at night.

Negative: Sentimental Ella being sentimental is a negative trait because it negatively impacts her life. She’s especially attached to her family home after her parents pass - she says that they loved it and were happy there. This is the reason why she stays with her stepmother and stepsisters even when there’s nothing else keeping her there. If Ella could’ve let go of her family’s home, she would have been free of their abuse much sooner.

Negative: Selfless When her stepmother finds out that Kit is in love with Ella, she tries to make a deal with Ella, agreeing to let her marry the prince as long as she can guide him in ruling the kingdom. Ella immediately turns her down, swearing to protect the prince and the kingdom. As a result, Ella is locked away in the attic by her stepmother. There are other instances of her selflessness, including her giving what little food she has to the animals who’ve befriended her and serving her stepmother and stepsisters. Ella always thinks of others, but that often means she has to get by with less for herself.
